WNYC App Comentários

Bring back the old App!

After not working properly for weeks, the "new" app is working again. But the AM is now missing from the Live page. The only reason I care (because I rarely stream from the app) is that the Live was the closest thing this version of the app has to a schedule. A poor one, because possible only to see what's ahead in the next few hours, not the full schedule for day or week.I need to go to the website for that. So of what use is the app for planning one's real live radio listening?

Still very buggy.

Whenever it jams up—which happens a lot—you gotta quit out and restart. Unfortunately there’s no option to dial down the constant identity focus to their coverage. If not for Brian Lehrer, a lost cause.

Glitchy

The old app worked every time. This new app is hard to navigate and literally DOES NOT LOAD more often than not. I am currently into minute five of off/on trying to get it to load - and this has been happening for the past 3 weeks or so. Time to write a review!

Simply terrible

This app has one basic function: open a stream from WNYC. It fails miserably at that primary function. If you start the app fresh, it will open the stream just fine. Stop the stream and want to restart it? Sorry, chump. Have to quit the app and restart. Them yon can start the stream. But only the FM stream because for some bizarre reason, they have removed the AM stream completely. Again, all the app has do it open a URL and play the resulting stream and it fails at this task all the time. If you could click one link in a web browser and then have to restart the browser, you would be infuriated. That is the case here, but the case is so limited it is absurd it doesn’t work.

Where’s the am stream

I prefer to listen to am on Sunday mornings. That option isn’t available on this version.

App good in theory

I love WNYC, but this doesn’t work well. I have to keep closing it and reopening it to get the audio to work.

Not A Well Functioning App

The app keeps freezing and stopping audio. While listening, I have to either go into the app 10 times within an hour to play the soused audio or completely restart the app by deleting it and redownloading it again to fix the problem. The app has one main job - to play audio and it can’t do it well at all.

Constantly buffering

App simply buffers every time I go to open it. Need to restart my phone to get past. Very annoying.

Does not work

This app is terrible. It does not work. So frustrating. I stream through Safari instead.

Still unstable

This app is a downgrade from the previous one. Any time my audio is interrupted - by a call, or a video that opens in another window - the WNYC audio will not restart. I have to force quit and then restart the app just to get it to continue playing. Sometimes even if I manually pause the audio (to hear a subway announcement for example) and then press play it won’t restart. This is literally the most basic functionality of an audio app and must be built into any iOS audio API no? How can this be this bad??

Worse than Previous Version

And that’s saying something. I agree with everything that OverlordXXVI said. And the kicker is the on-air promotions for the new and improved app.

Bugs fixed!

Glad to see the live streaming and replay issues repaired, thanks for the updates. So much easier for me to navigate, especially on the home page where I can check out what else I might have missed live. Keep it up!

Great additions!

I really like being able to read Gothamist articles on the app now!

Horrendous

Well, after reading reviews of the updated app, it’s good to know it’s not just me having issues. The old app wasn’t as flashy, but it did the job.

Worse than ever

Somehow the app is getting worse. Requires me to open / close the app a few times to get it play most days. Still can’t find prior segment recordings of All things Considered or Morning Edition. This update remains a huge disappointment

This app is pretty bad

This app is so much worse than the old one. Often won't play or turn off. Wish I could use the old one...

Live Stream Feature Worse After Update

I was really excited for the update because I thought it would improve the live stream feature. Live streaming is now worse than ever. The stream will just randomly stop (not interrupted by call or other media) and virtually every time I open the app and click into the live stream it doesn’t actually load and the loading bar just spins so I have to exit the app and restart it to get the stream working. Really disappointed that a radio station couldn’t get this feature to work right.

I hate when the new version is worse than the previous

This version is much much much worse at resuming after another audio source finishes. It’s much worse at resuming period. I have to quit the app to get it to resume audios never had to do that with the previous version. The new schedule listing is helpful but the lack of audio function and resuming is not with the trade off. Where’s the Downgrade button?

Spotty Streaming Performance

This app is big, bloated and fails to perform its primary task well. On-air streaming freezes at the slightest provocation, and is difficult to restart. This can be overcome by closing and reopening the app, which is annoyingly inconvenient.

review update

Works fine now, back to the WNYC I have know and loved for years. Thanks!

Craptastic

Still craptastic after all these months. Crashed, turns off, after I hang up on a call it doesn’t restart the stream. It’s awful. No more donations for you WNYC until this app improves.

Very poor!

Reception is cut off often. At times I can’t turn it off. Not reliable! Please fix it!! I love this station but the app is pathetic!!

Drop off

Suddenly, when something interrupts a program. you have to start it again. I guess the smart people of WNYC have never heard the expression: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Listening is the issue

Using an iPhone12, audio drops if WNYC is not the active screen. Audio also drops when screen goes to sleep. Also lost Bluetooth pause/play control in latest version. Since “live listening” issues appear to be a big complaint, please address it soon and put the live listening page on top when launched. Thanks, Sustaining Supporter

latest version is even worse-poor interoperability with iOS

doesn't start playing again after a call comes in or a timer goes off. you have to go into the app to start the live stream up again

Terrible

I listen to WNYC every day, and have done so for years. As a longtime supporter, I’ve had to stop listening to the live broadcasts for all the reasons other reviews note: it stops when my phone goes to sleep, doesn’t resume after a brief interruption, etc, all of which makes it functionally unusable. PLEASE fix or bring back the old version!

Please Please Please Bring Back The Old One

The new app looks beautiful--but it's essentially ALL form over function. Not only does the new version not remember your place once you start a podcast, but you also can't hit pause and then play again in the lock screen. We love you, WNYC: Please make it easier to listen!

Moody Play button

I don’t know what’s up with this app, but I have to press Play a bunch of times every time I try to turn it on. It’s super frustrating. It also turns off randomly. it feels like a lot to navigate through just to listen to the radio. I miss the old app!

“improved”

this long-overdue update is technically an improvement (the progress slider no longer directly covers the iphone dock, i’ll give them that) but it’s still one of the least functional audio-playing apps i’ve used. the issue with audio stopping with every alarm/ notification/ incoming call/ etc. makes it almost unusable, since i’m generally listening at times when i’m making heavy use of alarms (getting ready for work, cooking, etc.). too much emphasis on gothamist/ written stories on home page, and counter-intuitive groupings on the browse page (it’s a straight alpha sort, so under ‘news,’ “brian lehrer: a daily politics podcast” is towards the top of the list, and the actual “the brian lehrer show” is near the bottom). and this annoying thing remains unchanged since the update: no delineation between current and former shows (there’s a certain show that starts with ‘a’ that is at the top of every show listing, even though the last episode came out in 2017). deeply unthoughtful version of this app.

Constantly drops terrible app

I used to listen all the time, now it drops on any mobile device when you get an alert, call or notification. Contacted them they admitted they never tested the “new” app on a real phone

Bad app

This app stops playing when it’s interrupted by a call or alarm, etc. It feels like it’s always when I can’t immediately touch my phone to find the app and restart it completely so I miss stuff on live broadcasts that I want to hear. It’s ANNOYING. Sometime I listen to an entirely different podcast and avoid WNYC altogether to keep from having to constantly be touching my phone, like when I’m cooking or driving. When will this app be fixed? I never had issue with old app and wish I could get it back.

Does not work with iPhone

When anything interrupts the app such as phone call, reminder or alarm the app shuts down. It does not continue on as EVERY other app I use does. In order to continue listening it is necessary to close out of the app and start all over. As a result I listen to WNYC much less than I used to and we significantly reduced our support to the station.

Not a fan of new front page and other issues

I used to love the convenience of the app. Since the “ upgrade” the app will get garbled and just fade out if I leave the room or my phone goes to sleep. This has never happened before. What happened?

App is inconsistent

So many times, the app doesn’t work. I prefer the older app. It was more reliable. I don’t need bells and whistles, I just want it to play live.

New app worse than the old app

The new app does not function as well as the old one. The audio cuts out and doesn’t restart easily. I have to completely close the app and reopen it several times a day. The text and visuals are also small and difficult to look at. Missing the old, simpler app.

Can’t open app anymore

WNYC suddenly disappeared. I usually listen Yat night. Waking to an early alarm on my phone I noticed that WNYC was not playing. Since then I only get a message saying’unavailable’. I can receive the broadcast on another phone but the landing page there is different. What’s up? Do I delete that which will not load; then start over and try loading the app again. Hope so. I’m trying that. And I hope I don’t lose you guys forever.

Wish had better privacy

Not thrilled to see that this app tracks me and links multiple datasets to me. Expected better from wnyc

Poor functionality

Listening to the live stream it will not automatically resume if it is interrupted by something else, such as a phone call or something that pops up on social media that uses audio. You also can’t simply press play on the lock screen or control center. You have to go back into the app to restart the stream. Really annoying.

Just give us back our old app

This app is terrible. It stops the feed multiple times, or it simply crashes, or it says there’s no Internet when there is. Please just bring back the old app. Until you fix it I’m just using Tune in Radio.

Frustrating

The app will not stay open. The minute the screen sleeps it stops. If I get an interruption it stops. Of and when it goes back on, I’ve lost a large part of the program. But often I wait a long time and realize it won’t go on until I open it on my phone again. This just doesn’t work. Please fix the bug!

Ditto to suddenly stops

Having same issue as June 18, 2024 writer and very frustrated by it. On an Apple 13 pro. Hope it is resolved soon because WNYC is a life line.

Good update but really miss the resume feature

First, props for finally updating the app after a few years of no development! Gone are the days of having to surgically avoid the iPhone Home Bar when trying to advance forward or backward in a program with the slider. And you can even advance +- 10 seconds from the iPhone lock screen like a native app! What I REALLY miss though is being able to resume later partially listened programs from where you left off. I used to do that a lot in the old app and it doesn’t seem to have any record of what you listened to or where you left off now. I see from other comments though that feature may be in development so preemptive 👏 if that’s the case. All in all very good update but missing a key feature.

Drops Off

I listen to WNYC daily through the app. The new update is disappointing and frustrating. The app will drop off/shut down when my alarm goes off, after a call, or interruption. The old version would reload and continue playing after the interruption, or I could quickly start up. Now I need to reset/find the app again, and often, I need to fully reload to play again (the play button won’t work). Please fix. I am a huge fan of WNYC - the poor basic functioning of this app pains me.

Miss the old version

New app quits and stops playing all the time. More difficult to navigate too. Why mess with perfection? Please revert… I’m tired of quitting and restarting multiple times a day!

Removed timer

The sleep timer has disappeared. It means I cannot listen late night. Need that timer reinstalled

Terrible! Change it back!

Awful “upgrade.” I’ll just say one thing: the play button OFTEN DOES NOT WORK. That’s all you need to know.

Paintmanchu

Why do tech nerds and app people always feel compelled to “improve” perfectly functional apps? Case in point: This new WNYC app was breathlessly promoted on WNYC shows, and it is basically useless, compared to the just fine previous app. I won’t go into detail because many have done that before me on all the 1 & 2 star reviews. I won’t be using the app until it is “improved” back to the uncomplicated previous version. Don’t be dumb WNYC! We depend on you!

Buggy

Audio stops whenever the display turns off (or goes to the Lock Screen). Very annoying.

Markedly worse

Don’t know why they needed to change something that wasn’t broken, but this is SO MUCH WORSE. Want the radio to play? Well, sometimes it just won’t. Want to pause and go back? Well, you can’t just hit play in iOS or click your earbuds, you’re going to need to go into the app and hit play again. Hit the volume up button? Well, sometimes it’s going to stop playing. Back to the app interface! It’s a lot easier to just stream from the website.
